About the Gallery:
The World Theatre Gallery is housed inside a multipurpose cultural centre. This cultural complex is a unique blend of heritage architecture and state of the art technology. The gallery is the largest gallery within this region with over 20,000 visitors annually and presents a broad range of exhibitions, including Charter Towers rich historical past through to contemporary Australian Art, social history, local artists and national touring programs. The venue houses a 660 seat live theatre auditorium, 2 cinema venues seating over 300, a 60 seat restaurant, meeting rooms and gallery space.
Collection Strengths
The World Theatre Gallery collection has grown significantly since its opening in 1996 and the galleries collection reflects the many facets of this region. The galleries compilation ranges from important Queensland artists and objects of historical significance to valuation contemporary and historic photographic works showcasing urban and rural landscapes. The World Theatre Gallery is constantly developing and the gallery enjoys the support of Friends of the Theatre and backing from the Charters Towers Regional Council.
Features of the local area:
As North Queensland’s most significant Gold Field, Charters Towers is nationally recognised as a hertitage icon. A city built on gold, Charters Towers flourished during the bustling gold boom of the later 1800s. By the turn of the century it had become Queensland’s second largest city, and has the honour of having one of the first regional stock exchanges built in 1888.
For the visitor wishing to ‘dig’ further into Charters Towers’ mining past, the Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail is highly recommended. The self guided trail begins at the Visitor Information Centre with an Orientation Film and then follows on to the Stock Exchange. Next, make your way to the Venus Battery, the largest surviving battery relic. Complete your trail at Towers Hill, with a short drive or hike to the top giving panoramic views of the city. An evening screening of the film ‘Ghost after Dark’ in the amphitheatre rounds off your trail.
Other points of interest include the two cemeteries, historic Ambulance Centre and the Charters Towers Folk Museum. One can play a game of billiards on the original 100 year-old tables at the Civic Centre, or if you are more of an outdoors type, then the region offers a variety of recreational activities. Five self-drive tours throughout the region afford excellent opportunities as well.
A golden city with a colourful past, the lively heritage bring Charters Towers to life, and makes this town a must see on an itinerary. It lies 138 kilometres south-west of Townsville, on the Flinders Highway.
